The Quintette Mine site located about 20 km south of Tumbler Ridge was the largest open-pit coal mine in Canada. It had operated for almost 18 years up until 2000 when it closed. It was to re-open in 2014 but the market price was low and it didn't open. In 2016 Brule Mine started operation in September of 2016 located between Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge.
