Canucks Clinch 1st Place
When the Grande Prairie Athletics meet the Dawson Creek Canucks it is alway a great hockey game in the NPHL. Last night in Dawson Creek it was the Canucks winning 5-4, Thursday January 24, 2019.
In the first period it was the Dawson Creek Canucks getting on the scoreboard first as Brett Norman scored at 15:59 with Ryan Friesen and Riley Muise getting the assists. (1-0) No more goals were scored as both Tyler Boe of the Athletics and Kenton White of the Canucks stopped the rest of the attempts. After 1 period the Canucks were sitting on a 1-0 lead. Shots on goal: visitors 13 - home 18. There were 2 minor penalties called with each team getting 1. (Blake Clement (GP) Elbowing 3:24, and Brett Norman (DC) holding at 3:24.) 

In the 2nd period the Athletics started their comeback as Lyndin Lewis scored (1-1) at 18:20 from Tyrell Mason. Then Tyrone Kipling made it 2-1 for the Athletics at 17:56, assisted by Tanner Labbe and Mark Stojan. Then Tyrell Mason extended the Athletics lead 3-1 at 10:33, unassisted. Frederic Tanguay got one back for the Canucks with 7:02 remaining in the period, a powerplay goal (3-2) as Brett Norman and Kevin Swales got the helpers. That was all for goals with the Athletics nursing a 3-2 lead going to the dressing room. Shots on goal: visitors 18 - home 22. There were 4 minor penalties called with the Athletics getting 3 of the 4. (Tanner Labbe (GP) Interference 14:19, Mark Stojan (GP) Tripping 8:18, Brock Clement Cross Checking 3:33, and John Wayne Howes (DC) Cross Checking 1:33).

In the 3rd period it took a while but finally Evan Weaver scored for the Canucks tying the game 3-3 at 9:11 with Brett Norman setting up the play. That momentum was shattered as Mark Stojan gave the Athletics back the lead (4-3) at 7:12 a powerplay goal with assists to Morgan Maclean and Andrew Buote. Matt Schmermund of the Canucks tied the game 4-4 with 3:39 left to play, assists to Dolan Bjornson and Jonathan Jasper. With 14 seconds left Brett Norman gave the Canucks the win (unassisted) and gave the Canucks first in the West DIvision and a first round bye. The Canucks won it 5-4. Shots on goal: visitors 14 - home 21. There were 3 minor penalties called with the Canucks getting 2 of the 3. Levi George (DC) Kneeing 8:35, Braden Crone (GP) Hold Stick 4:01, Evan Weaver (DC) Roughing 2:39.
