UPDATE: The church was set on fire May 22nd, 2023 and burned to the ground. Two men were arrested and charged with break and enter to commit theft and arson. Both men were in their 50's and from High Prairie. The Roman Catholic Church operated a residential school in Grouard from 1894 until 1961. In 2022, 169 possible grave sites were identified with a ground-penetrating radar search near the former residental school that could have been students and adults from the area burried there over a period as far back as 129 years. The Spanish Flu killed 55,000 Canadians between 1918 and 1920 which included many Indigenous people attending residential schools. DiscoverThePeaceCountry.com |
