In September 2012, the Alaska Hotel burned to the ground. At the time there were about 12 people living in the hotel.

The Alaska HIghway House located right next to the hotel was saved. Unfortunately, other businesses to the south of the Alaska Hotel, which included the Alaska Cafre and Brass Scissores were destroyed by fire.
