Grande Prairie Young Offenders Centre Closes
April 2009 - Written by Ken Connors

Ten teens were transfered to Edmonton as the Government announced it was shutting down the centre to save over $2 million. Even though only ten teens were currently in the centre, the facility handled about four hundred offenders through-out the year. The help came in the form of in-centre school programs, drug and alcohol sessions, life skills, plus a lot more. The 36 bed facility held young people between the ages of twelve and seventeen years from through-out Northwestern Alberta. Now young offenders would be sent hundreds of miles from their home making it a difficult situation for their families. Also a dozen full-time jobs along with 15 wage positions were eliminated from the Grande Prairie location.
